Lots of Zooming Automobiles

Here is another animation for ANGA. This particular piece had a very short turnaround time (about 5 days) which made for a hectic schedule. To save time, I used Trapcode particular "road" scenes where lots of cars ride through the scene. Particular pulled a frame with a car graphic at random from a separate composition, and then I set the particle system to simulate cars on the road. The flipping gas meter was an exercise in nesting comps in After Effects and then setting the number generates to scroll from the start numbers to the finish.

Jumping into the Debate, With Lots of Particles

ANGA Factcheck on "GasLand" from Peter von Elling on Vimeo.

I created the motion graphics and text for this video that's part of the debate around the documentary movie GasLand. I worked with the Art Director to develop the gaseous particles that bubble, flow, and rise throughout the video. My idea was to connote the energy and dynamism of gas particles as a metaphor for the energy it provides. The particles were created mostly using Trapcode Form and Particular, and color matched to each particular scene. The goal was to have them integrated with the scene, so they moved how the scenes in the footage moved in a natural way.

The gaseous motif extended into the long text scenes that fact check the claims in the movie. Clarity was most important to the client, so the text animations had to subtly support the claims and counterclaims presented. We used color to differentiate the various responses.

I also created the edit transitions with the old style burnt film look and was called on to do some light editing when it came close to finish.

Giant Holiday Ornaments in Washington, DC

SAGE Holiday Video Card 2010 from Peter von Elling on Vimeo.

I love it when you accomplish (almost) everything you wanted in a project. There were many steps in the process from shooting the Washington, DC landmarks through to final render and editing. In addition to shooting the live action plates on a Canon 7D, I also shot panoramic HDRs of the locations to provide accurate lighting for the 3D models I created and composited into the shot. In addition to the HDRs, I used Luxology modo's physical sun settings to recreate the lighting on the day of the shoot. Everything was then rendered and composited in After Effects, where little touches like contact lighting, flares, and grain matching was added as well.

Touring a Web Site, in Style

Success at the Core Web Tour from Peter von Elling on Vimeo.

I got this gig after another studio tried to do a web site tour using screencasts and it just didn't work. I created this entire web tour in After Effects, recreating the interactive experience "by hand," manually moving cursors and making highlight text. While this was more work intensive, it allowed unprecedented freedom and much greater resolution to really get "inside" and "move around" the web site.

NBAA 2010, Shot on a Canon 7D

FlyCorporate's NBAA 2010 Show Coverage from Peter von Elling on Vimeo.

For the fourth year, FlyCorporate asked me to provide video coverage of the NBAA Convention in Atlanta, GA. I love the fact I get paid to shoot video of cool aircraft!

This time, I took the plunge and shot it on a Canon 7D. It gives a great look and a lot of control to use depth of field to isolate people from otherwise busy backgrounds. The amount of gear to have, though, to make it work on a run and gun production like this is quite a lot.

I did shoot some plates for the graphics to be added in later, like the dolly on the wing with aircraft shipments.

When the iPad and a Big, Thick, Book Met...

Book of Majors iPad App Introduction from Peter von Elling on Vimeo.

I was asked to do this animation on short notice for the unveiling of The College Board's new iPad application. The brief was to make it like an Apple iPad ad. I already had a 3D model of an iPad in the works, and I combined that with a model of the book to provide the hero shots. Originally, footage of the actual book was shot, but it looked better and we had more control with the 3d model.

I used the screenshots the client provided and composited that on the iPad for the shots showing how the app works.

Employees Make All the Difference

I had the opportunity to work with a great group of people on this shoot for Total Document Solutions. I produced this video highlighting their employees, and they are truly great folks to step up in front of the camera and do such a great job with no media or video experience at all. While they have a few butterflies, they stepped up and did a fantastic job. In some ways they made it easy for me to edit it together so they finished each other's sentences, because often, they did.
I also want to acknowledge the great job my DOP Fernando Ortega did shooting these on Canon HDSLRs. We shot 11 interviews on 1 1/2 shoot days with many different scene changes. Using those cameras allowed us to get some nice depth of field to separate out the interviewees from the background in some very tight spaces. Farhad Sha was also our great PA, handling sound duties as well.

Memory Lane

TDS 10 Year Retrospective from Peter von Elling on Vimeo.

The trick with this video was to find an interesting way to present the hundreds of photos from over 10 years of employees at a Document Management company. To tie it together thematically, even though the locations and events differed widely, I constructed a virtual set with documents and photos strewn about, linked together with virtual push pins and streaks of light. Some of the introductory photos were turned into "pop-ups" and played with depth of field with the light streaks linking them to other photos and times.

The video was made using luxology modo, After Effects, Photoshop, and Final Cut Pro.

Tracking Evan

Please vote for this film as your fan favorite and give it five stars at the Neuro Film Festival!

The film portrays the true story of Evan Moss and his battle against epilepsy and Tuberous Sclerosis (TSC) and how his family turned their hardship into something useful for everyone afflicted with epilepsy. The film tracks Evan from birth through his brain surgery to remove 3 tubers at the age of four, and his parents who turned their frustration into SeizureTracker.com, an online tool for logging seizures and medications.

NBAA 09 Event Video Coverage

FlyCorporate NBAA09 Coverage from Peter von Elling on Vimeo.

Coverage of the 2009 NBAA Conference and Expo for FlyCorporate magazine. The video includes an animation I create and animated 3D charts integrated with live action footage from the show floor. I also shot and edited the video. Music from Revostock.
