Jumping into the Debate, With Lots of Particles

ANGA Factcheck on "GasLand" from Peter von Elling on Vimeo.

I created the motion graphics and text for this video that's part of the debate around the documentary movie GasLand. I worked with the Art Director to develop the gaseous particles that bubble, flow, and rise throughout the video. My idea was to connote the energy and dynamism of gas particles as a metaphor for the energy it provides. The particles were created mostly using Trapcode Form and Particular, and color matched to each particular scene. The goal was to have them integrated with the scene, so they moved how the scenes in the footage moved in a natural way.

The gaseous motif extended into the long text scenes that fact check the claims in the movie. Clarity was most important to the client, so the text animations had to subtly support the claims and counterclaims presented. We used color to differentiate the various responses.

I also created the edit transitions with the old style burnt film look and was called on to do some light editing when it came close to finish.

Employees Make All the Difference

I had the opportunity to work with a great group of people on this shoot for Total Document Solutions. I produced this video highlighting their employees, and they are truly great folks to step up in front of the camera and do such a great job with no media or video experience at all. While they have a few butterflies, they stepped up and did a fantastic job. In some ways they made it easy for me to edit it together so they finished each other's sentences, because often, they did.
I also want to acknowledge the great job my DOP Fernando Ortega did shooting these on Canon HDSLRs. We shot 11 interviews on 1 1/2 shoot days with many different scene changes. Using those cameras allowed us to get some nice depth of field to separate out the interviewees from the background in some very tight spaces. Farhad Sha was also our great PA, handling sound duties as well.
